Details of the German Government WASCAL Scholarship

WASCAL has announced its call for applications for the 2025/2026 academic year. This initiative aims to develop climate-resilient leaders across West Africa through its Master’s and PhD programs in Climate Change and Adapted Land Use.

With funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and in partnership with top German universities, this scholarship provides exceptional opportunities for students in the following 12 West African countries:

Eligible Countries:
Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea Conakry, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, The Gambia, Togo.
Note: Applicants from other ECOWAS member countries may apply as self-funded candidates, subject to availability.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the WASCAL Scholarship, applicants must:

Be a citizen of a WASCAL member country.
Hold a Bachelor’s degree (minimum second-class upper division) in a relevant field.
Demonstrate intermediate proficiency in English.

Benefits of the Scholarship

The WASCAL Scholarship includes:

Full coverage of university tuition fees.
Monthly stipend for living expenses and accommodation.
Roundtrip airfare.
Travel allowances for field research in selected West African countries and Germany.

A personal laptop (on loan for the program duration).

WASSCE or SSCE Certificate (for Anglophone countries).
Two recommendation letters from professors or senior researchers.

University degree certificate.
Proof of English proficiency or a self-assessment statement on English skills.
Evidence of professional experience in a relevant field (if applicable).
Written commitment to pay a €30 registration fee upon admission.
