TechGirls Summer Exchange Program 2025 | Fully Funded
The TechGirls Summer Exchange Program is a U.S.-based initiative aimed at empowering young women (ages 15-17) worldwide to pursue education and careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The program provides hands-on training to build skills and inspire future STEM leaders.
The program, fully funded by the U.S. Department of State, covers all expenses, including travel, accommodation, living stipends, visa, meals, and healthcare for participants.

Program Details
Since its inception in 2012, the TechGirls Summer Exchange Program has trained over 653 young women. Initially focusing on participants from the Middle East and North Africa, the program expanded globally in 2022, inviting STEM enthusiasts from all six global regions:
- Western Hemisphere
- Sub-Saharan Africa
- Europe and Eurasia
- East Asia and the Pacific
- Middle East and North Africa
- South and Central Asia
Participants engage in a 24-day program in the U.S., beginning with an immersive TechCamp at Virginia Tech. The camp provides hands-on training in cutting-edge STEM fields, followed by visits to cities like Austin, Chicago, Denver, or Seattle for community immersion and STEM career exploration.
Upon returning home, participants conduct community-based STEM projects with seven months of mentorship, creating a multiplier effect.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be citizens and residents of eligible countries (listed below).
- Be between 15-17 years old by the start date of the exchange (July 13, 2024).
- Birthdate must be between July 13, 2006, and July 13, 2009.
- Demonstrate advanced STEM skills and a strong interest in STEM-related academic studies.
- Plan to pursue higher education or careers in STEM, particularly technology.
- Possess strong English skills (intermediate or higher).
- Show maturity, flexibility, and an open-minded attitude.
- Commit to completing a community-based project after returning home.
- Meet U.S. J-1 visa eligibility requirements (U.S. citizens are not eligible).
Note: Preference is given to those with limited or no prior experience in the U.S. Applicants who participated in U.S. exchange programs within the last three years are ineligible.

- Sub-Saharan Africa: Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Zambia, Ghana.
- East Asia and Pacific: Cambodia, Fiji, Indonesia, Mongolia, Taiwan, Vietnam.
- Europe and Eurasia: Albania, Cyprus, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro, Turkey.
- Middle East and North Africa: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Tunisia.
- South and Central Asia: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan.
- Western Hemisphere: Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, Suriname.
- United States.
Program Benefits
The TechGirls program provides:
- Visa fees for international participants.
- Roundtrip airfare from the participant’s home country to the U.S. and domestic flights within the U.S. (if needed).

- Dormitory housing at Virginia Tech (double occupancy).
- Hotel accommodations in Washington, D.C. (double occupancy).

Selection Process
Participants are selected by independent committees composed of STEM professionals and regional experts. For international candidates, U.S. Embassy personnel in the applicant’s country conduct interviews. Legacy International handles interviews for U.S. candidates.
